FAME East Event Recap
Athletes from all around the globe gathered together and showcased their talent in Montreal this weekend at the annual FAME East show!
Not even language barriers between the athletes and staff could weaken the heightened enthusiasm that was brought in both to the registration and to the stage the following day.
The event kicked off with registration Friday evening at the prestigious Holiday Inn. As the athletes lined up anxiously awaiting to receive the number that would symbolize who they were the next day, the positive support that encompasses the room was clearly visible. Athletes would step out of line to help the one who may not have understood the staff clearly and Stephane Laporte would glance at the registration staff in case a communication barrier came up so he could come to the rescue and rescuing he did a lot of! "Un petit peux" became everyday vocabulary for us staff!
Despite the large amount of athletes, registration was a smooth procedure and finished in the allotted 3 hour time giving athletes plenty of time to gather with the rest of their team and go over any last minute details with their show prep and so on. The evening also had a FAME camp rooted into the registration night and was held by FAME event manager and athlete Shannon Lucier who led athletes through proper posing and walking techniques so they could be at the best for the show tomorrow.
Upon arriving at the Theatre Outremont, an operette like venue complete with balconies and multiple-level seating, a team of willing event supporters and staff were already waiting to assist in any necessary details that needed to be completed before prejudging began. FAME Pros Maurice Vaillancourt, Julie Marsland, Sylvia Tremblay, Larry Vinette, Isabelle Galarneau, Alicia Neasmith, and Dave Catudal were all on hand backstage helping out with translations, gathering up and preparing athletes to hit the stage.
After the vigorous screening process each FAME athlete in the Muscle category is subject to go through, prejudging began. The morning show kicked off with each age division in Muscle. All of the fine tuned athletes made it nothing short of grueling to the reputable judges that were in control of deciding who would walk away a champion. From as young as 20 to as old as 73, the muscle athletes showed the audience that age really is nothing but a number with their glistening fine tuned bodies and unique routines to accentuate them.
Being the only figure model in this show, Valerie David, took the opportunity to shine and show the judges what she had to offer to the world of competitive fitness. Her symmetry and poise was nothing short of amazing!
Fitness was the next category to display their talents as they kicked off each with their fitness routines. Veronique Lortie wowed the panel with her amazing displays of strength and flexibility that had never been seen before. Joisiane Desroches and Katy Dupuis also presented the audience with upbeat performances that had hands clapping to the beat within seconds.
Muscle Model and Fitness Models were the last group to exhibit their sculpted physiques to the audience and the judges. Showcasing their talent in both swimwear and sportswear, it was easy to see that the judges would have their work laid out for them.
The Judging show finished up around 3pm allowing the athletes to relax for a while and prep up for the highly anticipated evening show that was set to follow at 7pm.
Family member, spectators, and various media outlets flooded Theatre Outremont as the doors opened at 6:30pm. With the seating being sold out to support FAME athletes, it was evident that Montreal's fanbase for fitness athletes is astounding.
The show opened with athletes coming up the stage in two's allowing the audience a glimpse of what was to come as the show continued on. To finish off the opening act, event emcee and renown magician Stephane came out from behind the athletes and introduced the show with flair! His comedic approach had the audience well relaxed and laughing within seconds.
Massimo Mancuso dazzled the audience with his stunning physique and surprisingly young age. Grabbing 1st place, Massimo showed the audience that any age can get to their goal. Felix rounded off the Junior division coming in 2nd place. In the Masters category Sylvan Deschamps walked away a FAME Masters Pro as he wowed the judges with his physique and outstanding routine. Richard Villeneuve took first in the Grandmasters earning his Pro card as well!
At 71 years of age, Guy Lariviere did what only a fraction of people his age can do, win first in a bodybuilding category and earn his Pro Card!
Both the open and advanced level bodybuilding were divided into two categories: short and tall. Eric Guay walked away 1st with Costa Zervos and Spiros Stavropoulos rounded out the category coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Francois Beauregard astounded the judges with his sculpted physique and entertaining routine taking home the first place award. Matthew Scodras and Jean-Jacques Barett followed closely behind coming in second and third. Sylvan Deschamps had something else to be proud of this night as he not only walked away a Pro in the Masters category but also one in the Advanced tall! New FAME pro and overall show winner, Henri-Pierre Ano, astounded the audience with his fluid routine and showed the audience what "Razor" Renaldo Gairy would be up against as he did the splits in front of Renaldo's poster which such ease. Did I forget to tell you it was his FIRST time doing the splits?!?!
Although Valerie David was the only figure competitor, she took advantage of this opportunity by doing extra poses for the audience and continuing to wow them with her hard earned physique and upbeat routine! Not only did Valerie walk away a winner, she is now also the newest FAME figure PRO!
Just when things couldn't get any more entertaining for the crowd, the fitness girls came on one by one to pump up the audience with their strength-induced upbeat fitness routines. Mainly hip hop based, these routines had the audience cheering louder than ever as the girls performed strength moves only a fraction of us could do and all of us who wish we could do. Josiane Desroches proved to be the winner of this category. Her philosophy for being a fitness athlete "I am not only the star of my movie…I am also the producer and the director and therefore, I control my movie destiny." And control is exactly what she did, becoming the fitness champion in the open category!
In the advanced category Marie-Eve Anctil inspired the judges and wowed the crowded with her Little Red Riding Hood theme. The routine, inspired by Fitness Pro Sylvia Tremblay, earned Marie-Eve Anctil pro status in the fitness category!
"What motivates me is the joy of being able to look back behind me and see how far I've come" and far is an understatement! Flying in all the way from London, England to participate in this event, Rob Riches worked his magic and walked away a new Muscle Model Pro! Jean-Jacques Barett and Francois Beauregard rounded out the event placing 2nd and 3rd. Linda Delormier's sensational physique earned her a Pro card in the Muscle Model female category. Following close behind were Brigitte Lehoux and Jacynthe Anctil.
From father to son, to unique themewear and great figures, the fitness model category had everyone chanting at who they thought would be the next champion. In the men's short division Jesse LeBlanc took first. Stepping on stage with his father that night Jesse says it was his father, Denis LeBlanc, who brought up the idea of competing together and wants to thank him for his love and support. To most of the audience and us backstage, it didn't even look like father and son but and older brother instead! Coming in a close second, Matthew Elliott followed his own advice he also spreads to others "follow your goals and dreams with the burning desire inside of you and you can accomplish anything." Felix Daigle came in a close third. "Competing gives me incredible ability to believe in myself and accomplish my goals" and accomplishing is what Rob Riches did as he also earned his new pro card in the Fitness Model category!
Allison Pullen, Isabelle Rochon and Luciana Pursell all walked away champions of their fitness model categories with Luciana earning her Pro card in the Fitness Model category.
A spectacular pairs routine was also performed by Montreal trainer extraordinaire, Yannik Morin and new Figure Pro Valerie David. The sultry routine had everyone amazed at what true teamwork can portray.
To cap off the show and give the audience one final burst of excitement, WNSO Muscle Pro Larry Vinette hit the stage to perform a 3 minute guest routine. Prior to the routine Larry had asked the lighting and music director, James Clement, to turn it down when he looked a little weak so he can re-energize but there was no turning the props down for Larry because James said he could never tell when Larry needed some time. He was so energized throughout the routine that he took his act and walked up the aisles with it just so everyone can get a closer glimpse of what he worked so hard on! Posing in chairs with the heavy metal music blaring had the whole audience chanting and whistling at this fine tuned athlete!
Shortly after his routine finished and people regained composure, it is Larry after all, the awards were handed out by all the Pros who were enthusiastic and team players all throughout the day helping out the athletes and staff with whatever they could. Dressed to impress, Julie Marsland, Alicia Neasmith, and others were excitedly giving out awards to the athletes they not only knew from the competitive scene but also who had become friends to them on this day of continuous teamwork.
We wish to thank all those who made this event such a huge success. Christian who helped expedite all the athletes in both French and English, all the FAME Pro athletes who not only are idols of the newer athletes but now also friends, the entire staff at Theatre Outremont, show organizer and the amazing Mike Clement!
A tres bien goes out to all the athletes, and a merci beaucoup to everyone!
See you all next year!
